|Utility box 90 by 125 inches|
What was ugly and plain is now a sight to behold. Artist Thom Guerra has completed murals on two utility boxes at Santee's Town Center Community Park. These will hopefully be the first of many community art projects that celebrate the beauty of Santee.
The artworks were commissioned by the Public Art Subcommittee of the Santee Parks and Recreation Committee. The committee raises funds for arts and recreation programs by selling treats and drinks at community events local and by hosting the annual Santee Wine & Bluegrass Festival.
Guerra said he enjoyed being in the spotlight at the park while he was painting the murals. Many folks expressed their appreciation. The native of El Cajon said he honed his craft while working at his mother's sign shop, called Mom's Sign Shop, that today is located on Mission Gorge Road in Santee and is operated by his brother. Guerra is a prolific muralist, having completed 20 in just the last year. His most notable effort was a 28-by-22 foot mural in El Cajon on a wall at the Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Western Heritage Center.
